Why Your Building’s “Face” Shouldn’t Fade: AAMA 2604 vs. 2605 Explained

When specifying cladding, it’s easy to get lost in the aesthetics of wood grains and metallic finishes. But beneath the surface, there is a technical rating that determines whether your building will look “just installed” in ten years or suffer from premature fading and chalking.

At LUXYCLAD®, we use finishes tested to the most rigorous standards in the industry: AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605.

What is AAMA?

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) sets the performance standards for architectural coatings. These ratings aren’t just “certificates” they are the result of years of “torture testing” in the harsh South Florida sun to see how finishes hold up against extreme UV rays, humidity, and salt spray.

The Comparison: High Performance vs. Superior Performance

Feature AAMA 2604 (High Performance) AAMA 2605 (Superior Performance)
South Florida Testing 5 Years of Exposure 10 Years of Exposure
Color Retention Delta E < 5 (Minimal fade) Delta E < 5 (Elite fade resistance)
Gloss Retention 30% Minimum 50% Minimum
Ideal For Residential & Mid-Rise Coastal, High-Rise & Monumental
Durability “Super Durable” “Hyper Durable”

Why the AAMA 2605 Rating is the Gold Standard

While AAMA 2604 is an excellent, “super durable” choice for most residential projects, AAMA 2605 is the pinnacle of protection. Here is why it matters for your next project:

  • Elite UV Resistance: AAMA 2605 coatings are formulated with 70% fluoropolymer resins. This allows them to withstand double the sun exposure of 2604 with significantly better gloss and color retention.
  • Chalk Resistance: Over time,low-quality finishes break down into a white, powdery substance called “chalk.” AAMA 2605-rated finishes are engineered to prevent this erosion, keeping your façade smooth and vibrant.
  • Salt & Humidity Protection:
If your project is near the coast, salt spray is your number one enemy. AAMA 2605 requires 4,000 hours of salt spray testing (compared to 3,000 for 2604), ensuring the aluminum remains protected from corrosion.
